Ireland V Wales, initial reaction
Well, that was the pits. As bad as the worst days of the RWC.
The first 15 minutes seemed to be okay, phase building and keeping it tight, but after that it was all Wales. And after half-time things seemed to get even worse from an “ideas” pov. Nothing Ireland did was working. Rob Kearney was a shining light, but alone he couldn’t have much of an impact. Brian O’Driscoll also had a good match I thought, but constantly in defence, he had no real chance to make any breaks. Ireland played a totally defensive game. Never willing to take a chance.
And in the second half, when O’Driscoll was left to hobble on the field! clearly injured and unable to play on. It took far too long to get Fitzgerald on the pitch.
As the closing minutes ticked by, for the first time ever, I didn’t want Ireland to win. They didn’t deserve to.
Terrible terrible performance.
